James the Chimney Sweep, working in and around Golden Green

Golden Green is a village near Tonbridge, located within the Medway valley. It is close to Hadlow and the hamlet of Barnes Street is close-by. The local economy has thrived on agriculture and two particular commodities, fruits and cereals, have been of major importance. Residents also work outside the area, commuting for work elsewhere in Kent, such as Tunbridge Wells and further beyond. Buildings of interest include a Grade II church, Golden Green Mission Church, that opened as a tin tabernacle in 1914, which is a Chapel of Ease to St Mary's Church in Hadlow. History in the village marks two particularly dramatic events. Some 30 migrants hop pickers died when their wagon upturned on Hartlake Bridge on October 20 1853. The bridge is sited over the River Medway and the tragedy became known as the Hartlake disaster. Another incident was an aeroplane crash on August 6 1924. A Farman F60 Goliath aeroplane's engine failed en route to Croydon from Parish. Passengers were injured, it was reported at the time.
