Leigh village is only six miles south of Sevenoaks and really grew in the 19th century when the Morley and Baily families developed some lovely buildings which are still here today: Forge Square, Hall Place, East and Old Lodges, The Square and the School Master's House. The construction of the Redhill to Tonbridge Railway in 1842 also helped. The village also has a a large village green and the 13th century Parish Church of St Mary.
The origins of Leigh village date back to the 11th century, if not before, but it was the 19th century, which saw development with buildings such as Old and East Lodges, and Hall Place, erected; as well as the railway. The parish encompassed Moorden and Powder Mills, as well as Charcott hamlet. Set in the surroundings of the lush countryside of Kent, the very name 'Leigh' is believed by historians to stem from 'Forest Glade' in Old English, which sums up the well the Arcadian virtues of this settlement located in such a beautiful environment.
