Maresfield is a splendid village not far from Uckfield. The iron industry, as with much of Wealden District, gave Maresfield financial leverage for prosperity. There were five original furnaces: Lower Marshalls, Oldlands, Hendall, Old Forge and at Maresfield itself. Agriculture also played an important part under the control of owners at Maresfield Park House. The settlements of Nutley and Fairwarp were originally derived from Maresfield. The village was mainly agricultural in trade until 1926 and the families in Maresfield Park House, until the outbreak of the First World War, effectively controlled the settlement. The government at the time confiscated the estate and sold it in 1924to offset costs of war damage. There was also an army camp in the war period with accommodation for soldiers in Parklands and Queen's Drive. In recent years, there has been a lot of development at Forest Park, Park Farm (Field End, Maple Close and The Paddock) and the Cabin Cafe area.
