You will often find my chimney sweep brush sticking out of the top of a chimney flue in Hadlow. Residents in the village in the Tonbridge and Malling District love nothing more than a roaring, comforting and safe fire.
The Manor of Hadlow has been owned by different families of the landed gentry, the Earls of Gloucester, Earls of Stafford, Dukes of Buckingham were among owners in the past.
I love the main village street with its Tudor inns and ye olde style houses; brick-paved and resplendent. Even the village chemist, Hadlow Pharmacy, has given out medicines to locals since 1856. The freshness of the Rover Bourne flows as a perfect backdrop to this architectural idyll and there was once a watermill right in the village. The church dedicated to St Mary is more than 1,000 years old! Impressive stuff.
Breweries have played an important role in the village dating back to 1710. Some of the original buildings were a brewery run by Harrison and Taylor in the mid 19th century which eventually became protected under grade two status. The same protection is afforded to another brewery at Style Place that had been set up by William Simmons in the 1830s.
Hadlow Amateur Dramatic Society is thriving and has served the village community for more than 30 years with a blend of pantomine and serious performances. Education is also well catered-for in the village with the Hadlow College of Agriculture and Horticulture which set up its land-based training programmes in 1968 and Hadlow Rural Community School established in 2013.
Hadlow Cricket Club is the jewel in Hadlow's crown. Dating back to the mid-18th century, the game is still played by hardy villagers to the north in land off Common Road.
Hadlow is peacefully nestled in the Medway Valley in Kent. Not too far from Tonbridge, it is a fairly quiet and calm place to explore. A good, healthy tonic for the ailments of the city dweller. Part of the rat race, it ain’t!
