About Uckfield
With its name deriving from the Celtic for “high place”, Uckfield does stand out as a place of rural beauty. As well as its natural charms, it is also made up of several pretty buildings from various points in history. They are maintained to a great standard, and so Uckfield gives the impression of being a quaint British place.
Queen Elisabeth used to visit Horsted Place near Uckfield privately with the Duke of Edinburgh in the company of Lord Neville with whom the couple were great friends. A lot of chimneys to clean in that wonderful building! Locals knew she was around when the newsagent was asked to get copies of one of her favourite magazines, ‘The Sporting Life’. Attractions abound in the town itself range from the 15th century Bridge Cottage to Church Street with its post-medieval buildings.
Uckfield’s Church Street is the area considered to be the original heart of the town. The street is sited on an old route along a ridgeway, used by travellers in the period before 1500. There are buildings dating from the post-medieval period such as Copping Hall, Bakers Cottage, the Malt House, Milton Cottage, Church House and the Old Grammar School, where Uckfield Grammar School was sited. One family well-known in the town’s history, with links to these historic buildings, was the Markwicks, known for their experience in practical trades. This sense of historicity in the architecture displayed is remarkable and makes for somewhat delightful aesthetic visual tones for any visitors, as well as residents who enjoy living in the town.
Uckfield has seen a number of residents famous in different fields. Emma Lee French, well-known for her care of sick people in the USA where she led a very colourful life, was born in the town in 1836. Other characters in recent times include Lord Lucan, suspected of murder, who was last spotted at Grants Hill House. His disappearance adds to various mysterious happenings such as in Nan Tuck’s Lane. Property developer Nicholas van Hoogstraten, once the youngest millionaire in Britain, has property in the nearby area. Another famous resident is soul singer Rag’n’Bone Man (Rory Charles Graham) who hails from Uckfield, and has had a number one hit in Europe with his song, ‘Human’.
