Enjoy Christmas safely this year
Well… we all knew 2020 would end in tiers but Kentish folk are strong minded, even in the face of the latest news about high rates of Covid-19, and we will get through this together. Safety is the key word at this time and let’s be positive about Christmas.
In fact, safety is important in more ways than one. We’re rightly absorbed at the moment in wearing face masks, isolating, scrubbing, cleaning, spraying, keeping our distance – it’s easy to think that the coronavirus should be our only concern. Please don’t let your guard slip when it comes to safety in the home.
That means making sure there is no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from blocked chimney flues. Santa will soon be coming down the chimney (if it’s swept) and no doubt you will be wanting to enjoy an indoor roaring rosy fire – a glass of wine, nuts, olives and crisps in a bowl, opening gift after gift. Yet safety is paramount. Make sure your chimney is fit for purpose (call James the Sweep on 07587 134589) – don’t put your loved ones at risk over the festive season. The flue should be nice and clean – that’s why regular sweeping is SO important.
Yet it’s also crucial that you take safety precautions with decorations near the fireplace. Don’t put flammable tinsel near the fire, or any material that could catch alight. It may look Christmassy and pretty but it’s highly dangerous. All it takes is a stray spark to cause problems. Even if you have a woodburner and the flames are contained within the appliance – don’t take chances.
Meanwhile – despite the difficult times we live in. Have a very Merry (safe) Christmas and a Happy New Year. Do follow guidance given by authorities on Covid safety but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Christmas festivities this year albeit in a quieter way.
